Introduction to Becoming a Fiction Writer
The study of creative writing in higher education in the United States is nearing its 100th birthday. Despite its popularity and exponential growth in that time, the teaching of creative writing in most classrooms continues to be a product-focused enterprise geared towards publication, though the completion of the written artifact is the very last stage of the process. This course will teach students how to be more mindful of the full process of writing creatively, beginning from pre-conception to the completion of writing artifacts. We will cover techniques of how to read like a writer, how to work through or mitigate writer’s block, and how to make writing a regular habit nearly anyone can make time for. Being a writer is more than just writing and talent. It’s a mindset that leads to practice. It’s a way one lives within the world.
Journal to the Self (JTTS)
Journal to the Self (JTTS) is a 6-week course that meets once a week. I teach both face-to-face and virtual sections. Virtual sections will be taught using Zoom and Google Drive platforms. JTTS introduces students to thirteen different journaling approaches that can be applied to any facet of their lives. Though not a therapeutic modality in itself, students often find the practice of JTTS to be a healing, restorative, and introspective experience.
